Bank of America statement to Excel

Bank of America statements group transactions into sections, with deposits in one list and withdrawals in another, and they print no running balance beside each line. So instead of a row-by-row check, this converter proves the whole statement adds up: beginning balance plus deposits minus withdrawals must equal the ending balance.

How we read a Bank of America statement

A typical Bank of America checking statement looks like this:

Column in the PDFColumn in your spreadsheet
Date (MM/DD/YY)Date
DescriptionDescription
Amount in "Deposits and other additions"Credit
Amount in "Withdrawals and other subtractions"Debit
  • The section heading decides whether an amount is a deposit or a withdrawal, even when the sign is missing.
  • Each section's printed total ("Total deposits and other additions") is compared with the rows we found in that section.
  • The account summary on page 1 gives the beginning and ending balances for the overall check.
  • Rows are marked "Checked via statement totals" because there is no per-row balance to compare.

Common problems

The Balance column is empty

Bank of America does not print a running balance per transaction, so there is nothing to export there. The totals check replaces it.

The check failed but rows look right

A section that continues on the next page, or a section we don't know (such as a new fee section), can leave rows out. Compare the section totals in the result with your PDF.

Checks are listed separately

Statements with a checks section have their own total. If the overall total doesn't match, that section is the first place to look.

I want a running balance anyway

Add one in Excel: start from the beginning balance and add the Amount column row by row.

FAQ

Why no row-by-row check for Bank of America?

Because the PDF has no balance beside each transaction. The whole-statement check still catches missing or misread rows.

Which date format is used?

Month first, as printed. You can change the export to DD/MM/YYYY or YYYY-MM-DD.

Is anything sent to Bank of America or to us?

No. Nothing leaves your browser.
